Growing Regions

CBG 1.01 Antigua

Antigua’s coffee has a reputation for being sweet, smooth, and full bodied. Because of its famously high quality, unscrupulous sellers would frequently pass off coffee from other parts of Guatemala as Antigua or bring in cherry from nearby regions, such as Acatenango, to be processed and sold as Antigua for a higher price. In 2006, nearly twice as much coffee was sold as Antigua than had been produced in the region (Rosenberg 2007). To combat this deceptive marketing, Antigua formed the first regional grower’s association in 2000, and Antigua was the first region in Guatemala to earn a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) certification.
