On the far eastern edge of the country, near the border with Honduras and El Salvador, lies the youngest of Guatemala’s coffee-growing regions. Coffee-growing came to Nuevo Oriente in the 1950s as part of a drive to improve the economy in what was once one of the poorest regions of the country. Over the last 70 years, smallholders and subsistence farmers have been joined by larger farms, and thanks to improved roads, the region has become much better connected to markets.
