Valle del Cauca, in the west of Colombia, is named for the fertile basin flanking the Cauca River that runs through the centre of the department. In the east, Valle del Cauca reaches the edge of the central cordillera of the Andes, while in the west, the department includes a section of the lowland jungle along the Pacific coast. In between, the mountains of the central cordillera and the vast river valley dominate the landscape.
