In the 1800s, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Brazil were key coffee producers. After coffee leaf rust wiped out Sri Lanka’s crops in 1869, Brazil rose to dominance.
The “Age of Milk and Coffee” began in Brazil after slavery was abolished in 1888 and the republic was established in 1889, with coffee from São Paulo and milk from Minas Gerais driving the economy.
By the early 1900s, coffee became Brazil’s top agricultural product and still accounts for nearly a third of global coffee production.
In the 1990s, the specialty coffee movement introduced higher quality and traceability. Brazil hosted the first Cup of Excellence competition in 1999, solidifying its role as a producer of quality coffee.
