Cool Earth – How the Barista Hustle Community Helps

Barista Hustle is proud to support Cool Earth. We donate $1 from every package we send, for each and every subscriber, every month, and every online purchase. It’s part of our commitment in offsetting the carbon that is created by airmail, and protecting the earth from the devastating effects of climate change.

Cool earth is a charity that works alongside indigenous villages to halt rainforest destruction. By developing local livelihoods, their mission is to end the cycle of deforestation entrenching villages into further poverty. Creating strong, self-determining communities – not dependency. Of the worlds remaining forests, 46% are fragmented, 30% are degraded, and only 24% are intact. This loss isn’t just a crisis for the planet, but a tragedy for the local people who depend upon the forest. Cool Earth doesn’t spend money on reserves or fences. They don’t buy land. They secure the land tenure for the people who already live there and help them develop sustainable industries and provide community investments for better schools and health clinics.

Unlike many conservation charities, Cool Earth focuses on at-risk rainforest on the frontline of deforestation, rather than forest in the interior. This protected forest forms a shield to make the neighbouring forest inaccessible to loggers – saving millions of acres of adjacent forest.

Cool Earth currently has four active partnerships.

The  Asháninka partnership is the largest, where they work alongside fifteen villages in the Ené Valley of Peru to halt illegal logging. This is where Cool Earth has established a coffee growing industry. The organic, single origin, coffee is traceable right back to the rainforest, where coffee production is providing a vital income that means the Asháninka forest is safe from loggers.

The Awajún partnership works with six villages along the Rio Marañon in the north of Peru, close to the Ecuadorian border where oil extraction is the key threat.

The Lubutu partnership was Cool Earth’s first outside of the Amazon. Situated in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, this partnership is working with communities to protect forest between two National Parks.

Cool Earth’s most recent expansion has been to Papua New Guinea where the Yakolima Partnership is working with three coastal villages to save their rainforest from palm oil conversion. This now means that Cool Earth’s community-led model has been successfully replicated in all three of the world’s major rainforest basins.

We thank our community for their continued support of Barista Hustle as this enables us to support Cool Earth — helping create a better future for all and doing our bit to tackle climate change.
