Coffee Farm Management
Beginners Course with Hugo Portes
Coffee Farm Management is the first in a three part series of a video courses we are producing filmed entirely on some special farms in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Your anchor for this beautiful course is our great friend Hugo Portes. You know him from the Dry Mill Project.
Hugo has a huge amount of green coffee experience, having worked for Carmo, Falcafe and Sucafina. He’s a licensed Q-grader, a YouTuber, and he has the most utterly lovable screen presence. The combination of his amazing knowledge, his incredible enthusiasm for farming life, and his incredibly soothing and patient teaching style will help lodge this important info into the deepest recesses of your coffee minds.
The goal of this course is to help baristas, roasters and coffee enthusiasts understand the complicated and stressful role of a farm manager. Hugo presents the farmer’s perspective from all angles — starting from choosing your plot of land; establishing your own nursery; selecting the right varieties; planting your trees. Every aspect is laid out in vivid detail — how far apart to plant your trees; where and how to install your irrigation.
The course was shot on Cruzeiro, Cachoeira and Abaeté dos Mendes farms with the kind permission of our hosts Edivaldo Marinho Pereira and his son, Eduardo Henrique Soares. This course takes you right up to the point where the harvest begins. You’re going to love this tour of some of Brazil’s most innovative farms — and keep your eyes out for Eduardo if you decide to visit — cause he drives fast.
