Currently, the coffee industry occupies a land area of 10 million hectares (about 39,000 square miles), and 41% of it is grown under full sun. Coffee and cocoa industries could introduce larger (non coffee) trees, both as a source of shade for coffee plants and for additional revenue. This would represent a considerable opportunity for increasing the potential of the coffee industry to contribute to a reduction in atmospheric CO₂ levels.
